A good introduction Should:
- Give any background information that the reader needs to know - about the story of a book or what you are talking about.
- Clearly tell what the essay is about - in a 5 paragraph essay, tell what the three body paragraphs will be about.
- "Hook" the reader - get them interested!
- Set the tone for the essay - Is it formal? Is it informal? Who will read it? Is it serious or funny?
- Go from a big idea to a small idea

Things to help you in writing a conclusion:
- Play the “So What” game. If you think your conclusion has no new ideas or isn’t saying anything interesting, ask a friend to read it with you. Whenever you say something in the conclusion, ask your friend to say, “so what?” or “why should I care?” Then think about that question and answer it.
- Return to the ideas in the introduction. This helps the reader make a circle in their mind from the beginning to the end.
- Include a short summary of what you said in the essay, but show the reader how all those ideas fit together.
- Give an idea for something the reader can do, a solution to a problem, or a question to study more.
