Cause and Effect
For everything that happens, something else happens because of it. Cause is the thing that happens first. It explains why something happens. The effect is what happens after because of the cause. Think of the word "because." It has the word "cause" in it. The effect explains what happens.
When you read, sometimes it is simple to think about the cause and effect. You can find it in a single sentence or paragraph. Often in longer books, though, causes and effects are a big part of the story. The character doesn't like math because he had a bad teacher. The war started because someone killed the king. These kinds of causes and effects can be longer and looking at them carefully is an important reading skill! |
Grammar Alert!
In sentences that show cause and effect, we often use the words "because" and "so." The word "because" shows the cause. The word "so" shows the effect. Remember, though, you CAN NOT use "because" and "so" together in the same sentence. In Chinese, this is ok and good grammar. In English, it is NOT. You have to choose which one you want to do.
